The Second Trip Out for 2001 7-15-01

My crew for the day, my daughter Nicole and sister Chris.

Hey we are sailing and it is a nice day.

The beach is really quiet again just the way we like it.

Nice and quiet then a plane buzzes by pulling an advertisement.

The life guards seem to have an easy day...........

See we really are at the National Seashore.

Happy people getting off the ferry and we beat them here by sailing!

The picnic area, a nice setting. My Kingdom for a shade tree!

My sister Chris took this nice picture.

Here is the nice rest room facilites, showers and all.

See the other boats anchored far out in the water.

There we are pulled right up on the beach by ourselves!

Hey Nicole take a picture of your father. Nice job Nic!!

From the Captains Log

"Well Capt. and his mighty crew got up their courage and showed the sea a thing or two. We left pretty much on time and caught a NW wind over to the beach, the trip took an hour and twenty minutes. It was slow but straight there and a nice calm sea. There was only one other person with their trailer parked at the launch before us, it was a nice get away. We hoisted sails even before leaving the channel and were under sail power all the way over.(About five miles across) When we got near the beach we dropped the main sail and blew in with just the jib. It was high tide and you could hardly see the beach where we docked. Upon arriving at the ocean we were happy to see very few people and a nice looking ocean with only a few waves breaking. The water was tingling cold as I walked in up to my knees only. There was a man doing to back stroke way out who looked like he could easily do a swim around Long Island. Then a khyack came by from out of no where and was soon out of site. The best part was when a plane came by trailing it's banner flag only to read it was a dentist advertising! We were sure to write that number down! LOL (Laughing out loud) Lunch was a breeze at the snack bar without the 300 kids but you know what? The people still couldn't get the order straight and messed it up. We watched the flag in anticipation of it turning from the NW wind to the SW as the weather channel had told us it would do by the afternoon. About 1:00Pm it fell straight down and then started to change.... Whoopie! A good sail home too, we headed off to the boat. We had more time this trip out and I stepped up the quality of the pictures in the camera. By the time I was done shooting we had over 30 megabytes of pictures. When we got to the boat the wind was once again hitting us in the face from the NW instead of the SW. Well we were ready to go so we packed up and sailed off, actually motored off waiting to get away from the other boats, which really mounted up later in the day. The wind seemed to change a bit and instead of coming from the SW had now changed to the NE. This was directly where we wanted to sail and not what we wanted. We looked like we were headed off to Patchogue, which was the best heading we could take. Well to make a long story short it took 3-1/2hrs to return. I was thinking of the time my dad  jumped over board and tried to pull the boat by swimming with a tow rope.  There was not much wind at all. I wasn't jumping over though!  I think this was the longest crossing ever for me, it certainly has been a poor summer for winds, too much of, not enough or the wrong direction. I checked with the weather channel when I got back and they said the wind was 14 MPH where last time out they said 15 MPH.(The perfect storm time out) I think I have decided that they are pretty much useless!!!! When we got back to dock, there was no space for people to park, it was a mad house, boats going in still at 5:30Pm on a Sunday. There must have been a disagreement between people as one guy put his boat in and out 4 times, hit the piling with his car and seemed like a real crackerjack at backing up. The police were just telling him, he had enough fun for today and had to move on. It went faster than expected and we quickly pulled the boat out and broke down the mast and things. The crew was great again! Nobody was brave enough to take the helm yet! You can be the first that means!! I had turned over the camera during the sail over and asked to have my picture taken since it was pretty calm and there would be little peril to the camera, which is probably worth more than the boat at this point. Well, I have included their handy work for your evaluation. All kidding aside it was a great time on the seas and we all look forward to another day out there.

See you all soon,
Capt.Rich"
