The Third Trip Out for 2001 7-29-01

There we are beached at an unknown location!

Well there are other boats here so let's walk to the beach.

As usual there are no other boats beached, only us.

We beached at a walkway directly ahead leading through the reeds, to the ocean.

Here is a typical Fire Island house.

Look, more houses and a nice board walk leading to the ocean.

I learned from photo class to shoot through things, do you like the effect?

This is a dune that protects us from the ocean running over the Island into the bay. Sometimes these houses get washed away in big storms.

There is a house getting ready to jump in the ocean at the next storm.

There is the Beach, sure is beautiful. No rules here.

The beach is real quiet and the lifeguards have an easy day again.

I wonder where we are, few people seem to know of this place.

Hey, we are at Atlantique Beach, I have never been here before, cool!

Of couse the local politicians have to put their names on the sign!.

A lot of nice boats here. People probably dock here for the summer.

Most of these nice boats have TV's and airconditioning, just like home!

Can you see the kites? Gee I haven't flown one in ages.

There is the snack bar and a little ice cream shop, yum, no diet today!

There is my framing technique again, see our boat at the end?

Some other boats anchored or moored out.

A look back over the bay. Do you see that thing that looks like a mountain in the distance, near the red bouy? That is what we call mount Henrietta (after the supervisor who made it) and it is a garbage dump!

On the way home we were passed by this wise guy using his kitchen table as a boat. Only kidding, I think this was an ad for Mercury motors that claimed they could power anything.

From the Captains Log

"Well here it is Sunday evening and the end of yet another sailing day. Above are a sampling of pictures of the day. The winds blew from the south and south-east today, so we set sail in a south-west direction that brought us to Atlantique on Fire Island. This was my first time there. Sailing there was great, we passed over many very shallow water area's, some where the bay was only a foot deep. On the way back we saw two large motor boats aground and the crews trying to walk the boats out of the shallow areas. As I said before, if there is water I can sail and today was a good example of that. The winds really could not have been better for us today, they were a little less than the usual but fairly constant all day. It was a delightful day of sailing, if I do say so! Well it's August this week already, I haven't been over whelmed with requests for dates to go out. I have only been out three times, which is three times more than I went out last year but there are many places left to explore and good times to be had so send me an e-mail now with your request or book early for next year!

See you all soon, Capt. Rich "
